Hunting insurance and safety rules in Latvia – simple overview

If you’re planning hunting in Latvia, you’ll quickly hear about two things that matter just as much as trophies:

This article gives a simple, practical overview for foreign hunters: what kind of insurance to think about, and which safety rules you will meet in Latvia.

1. Do you need hunting insurance in Latvia?

There are two main types of insurance you should think about:

1. Liability insurance as a hunter – if you accidentally injure someone or damage property.
2. Health / accident / travel insurance – if you get injured or sick during the trip.

Latvian law requires hunters to follow strict safety rules and to be able to compensate damage they cause, but the detailed insurance requirement is not as standardised as, for example, compulsory car insurance (OCTA). 1.1. Hunter’s civil liability insurance

Latvian insurers offer general civil liability insurance for individuals, and in many policies you can specifically include “civil liability of a hunter”. In these products, the insurer covers losses caused:

• when you legally use your weapon and ammunition while hunting;
• by your hunting dog during hunting or training;

2. Who is responsible for safety in Latvian hunting?

In Latvia, hunting is not “do whatever you want in the forest”. There is a clear structure.

3. Safety rules in Latvian hunting – simple view

The full list of rules is long, but the main ideas are very practical and similar to other European countries, especially for driven hunts.

3.1. Before the hunt starts

At the morning briefing, expect the hunt leader to:
